Safety and escape route lighting ensures staircases and emergency exits are clearly visible and well marked. Corridors are fitted with presence sensors which constantly deliver the correct level of lighting just when it is required. In the same way external and pathway lighting can be switched on depending on daylight, movement or time.
Classrooms are fitted with robust switches that can handle the tough school day safely and when lessons are over, or at night, the building automatically switches into safety mode, blinds are up, lights out and sockets switched off. In busy or closed rooms CO2 levels can quickly reach the point where concentration fails. By the installation of air quality sensors a KNX system can ensure the air quality is maintained at the correct level thus ensuring that the pupil's learning capability is maintained.
Taking care of the caretaker
The job of the maintenance staff will be made much easier and their efficiency improved by the installation of the central monitoring system which provides an up to date overall display of all essential building information and reports faults in heating or lighting immediately they occur. This enables maintenance staff to act quickly and thereby prevent or reduce any damage that might occur. During the night surveillance mode ensures security by generating an alarm message each time a light is switched on or a window or outer door is opened. A call out service enables the school to be monitored without additional personnel - or even remotely. The fire and flood alarm systems can also be programmed to turn off electrical supplies in the affected area and turn on escape route lighting to ensure that the area is evacuated safely and efficiently. Workshops and laboratories are individually programmed to ensure that all refrigerated stock is kept at the correct temperature until it is needed again. Should there be a storm all blinds are automatically raised and skylights or dome lights closed.
Heating costs are a main contributor to operating costs and a KNX installation can considerably reduce these by having classrooms fully heated or fully ventilated only when being used. Utilisation times can be preset for individual classrooms according to the school timetable. In summer when windows are left open the system is automatically turned down to frost protection mode and blinds programmed so that as much available daylight is possible and used without glare. Constant light control automatically ensures that only the quantity of light required for the room is fed in as artificial light.
